If you experience odd problems after updating, or the message 'This game is currently unavailable message on Steam' is shown.
Please verify your Steam cache files. Problems such as: Odd characters in the menu. Buildings cannot be placed in-game. Language speech is missing or anything you had in the game before but don't after updating the game.
When I try to run Stronghold 3 the message 'Failed to initialize engine message' is shown.
If you are trying to play Stronghold 3 on a laptop with ability to switch between default Intel graphics card and your external graphics card, you will get this error.
To resolve this on some machines:
Open Device Manager
Expand Display Adapters
Disable (Lower End) Intel Display Adapter
To solve this problem for pcs with NVidia based cards:
Right click in Windows, select NVIDIA Control Panel and Set Stronghold 3 to always use the "High-Performance NVIDIA processor".
Otherwise, you can put the game into a Window which may allow the game to run. To do this edit the config.xml file located here:
32 Bit: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\stronghold3\bin\config.xml
64 Bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\stronghold3\bin\config.xml
At the end of the resolution put "windowed=1"
So for example yours may looks like this:
<resolution width=1024 height=768 windowed=1/>
Where can I find the Map Editor in Steam.
To locate the map editor in Steam. Click on the top menu 'View' and select 'Tools'. Scroll down and you will see 'Stronghold 3 - Map Editor'.
I cannot access the full resolution.
Manually pull slider for resolution to see all available resolutions, rather than using the mouse wheel. If this doesn't work edit the options.xml file with notepad and change the x_res="" y_res="" values.
Windows Vista/7 - \Documents\Stronghold 3\Profiles
Windows XP - \My Documents\Stronghold 3\Profiles
After installing the German/French version of the game I noticed that all the menu buttons are named "menu_History", "menu_military", "menu_option" and so on rather than the correct French or German text.
The problem is that the game is trying to play in a language that is not supported (English). If you change back to German or French the game should work correctly. To do this right click on Stronghold 3 in the games list and click on properties. Choose the language tab and then change the setting to French or German. If this doesn't fix the problem try verifying you have the correct files by following the instructions
detailed here.
The game says 'Failed to initialise the engine'.
This may mean that your graphics card driver has not been installed in Windows. Go to the website of the manufacturer of your graphics card and install the latest drivers.
I have found all the troops on military mission 2 but the level hasn't finished.
If some of the troops you have found have been killed by wolves you will need to replace them. Build a barracks, armoury and poleturner workshop and train some troops until you have replaced them.
I can't seem to place a hovel even though I have enough wood.
The ground may be uneven or a peasant may be walking under it. Try placing a smaller hovel further from the Keep instead.
I can't attract any people to my village.
You will need a positive happiness rating to attract peasants to your village. You will also need enough housing. You can check both of these stats in the bar at the top right of the screen. If you still aren't attracting peasants it may be that you have 24 idle peasants in the village which is the maximum allowed. If so give them jobs to do.
I can't control the troops/outlaws that have joined my village.
If troops or outlaws join your village from another estate you may find you can't move them when they have been all selected. If this occurs, click on and individual troop member and move them first. You should then be able to select the rest of the troops and command them as normal.
The game slows down when there are lots of troops on screen.
Go to the options menu and reduce your graphics levels and video resolution. If your machine is below the minimum spec however you may find the game runs slowly even with low settings.
The game has instantly dropped to 1 frame per second.
If the game suddenly becomes very slow in the single player campaign then delete the last building that you placed. If that doesn't work quit the level and reload it from your last save point.
My stockpile looks empty on military campaign mission 12.
The stockpile looks empty when you first start mission 12 however if you click on it you can see that there actually are resources available. Once one of your peasants places some resources onto the stockpile they will magically all appear.
Some of the unit commands don't work.
The 'Rally points' and 'Attack a specified area' UI commands currently have no effect. These features will be coming soon!
